Akro Agate Scotty Powder Jar
|
The Akro Agate Company of Clarksburg, West Virginia produced this heavy glass Scotty dog puff box. Their No. 649 jar was made for Lander Distributors of New York. This company filled the jar with a scented body powder package and marketed it to the dime store trade. The two part jar has a base with a slightly scalloped bottom. Four Scotties on a leash are embossed around the side of the base - two are seated and two are running. The underside is embossed MADE IN US OF AMERICA around the edge and also has the Akro Agate symbol - a flying crow with marbles in its beak and claws - in the center. A seated Scotty rises from the center of the domed lid and four more Scotties are embossed in a circle at the base of the finial. The jar has a 3.5" diameter and is 6.5" tall.
As may be seen in the photo, both opaque and transparent colored puff boxes exist. The various shades of opaque blue are almost endless. These range from a light powder blue through turquoise to almost cobalt. Opaque colored boxes in white, pink, and lighter blues are seen most often. The opaque Scotty dog powders in lime green, dark green, and cobalt are more difficult for collectors to find than the opaque ones. The more desirable transparent jars are the ice blue and amber ones, but the crystal dog is equally hard to find. In addition rare examples may be found either two tone or with colored marbleizing. Two tone jars usually have a Scotty figure one color and the rest of the jar another color. Marbleized jars will have colored swirls throughout the jar. Collectors need to be aware the ears of the Scotty are especially susceptible to damage.
