Consolidated Hummingbird Puff Box

The lid of the Consolidated Lamp and Glass Company's Hummingbird puff box features embossed hummingbirds embedded in a floral background. The sides of the base have a matching floral motif, and the bottom of the largest jar has another embossed hummingbird. The dome-shaped jar with the blue wash in this photo is 5" in diameter. This puff box was also made in 7" and 4" sizes. Finding the smallest size is the most difficult. The jar is frequently found in crystal with a colored wash, but it was also made in French crystal, and milk glass. French crystal is a Consolidated acid treatment on clear glass in which select protected areas remain clear and the remaining areas are satinized by the acid. In this style puff box the raised areas are usually clear and the deeper background is satin. Some crystal and milk powder boxes were decorated with multi-color hand painted highlights.
